Hernia occurs when tissue pushes through a weak spot in your muscles. This causes a bulge which may hurt or burn. Hernias do not heal on their own, and they tend to get worse over time. Surgery is the only treatment and cure for hernia.
By having surgery, you avoid the chance of a serious problem called strangulation. Hernias may be inguinal, umbilical, incisional, femoral, epigastric, spigelian etc. Based on your hernia type your surgeon will choose the convenient surgery method. In our clinic we use methods accepted all over the world (Schouldice, Lichtenstein, Hernia Prolene System).
Surgery technique
The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and takes half an hour. Ogten the patient can be discharged home on the same day . Mild analgesia such as paracetamol is usually needed for about a week. Patients usually return to the normal activity within a few days and they return to work in 1-3 weeks unless they have very heavy lifting to do.
Complications
The commonest problem after a hernia repair is swelling or bruising around the wound. The skin below the hernia scar may be numb after the surgery. This improves with time. Mild discomfort may remain in the area of the repair for some time.
