Breast reduction or reduction mammoplasty is a surgical procedure to reduce the size or to balance a difference in breast size after pregnancy.
Before your surgery
Blood examination
Electrocardiogram
Mammography
Surgery technique
This procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia and takes three to four hours or more. The surgeon removes the excess skin, tissue and fat and moves the nipple and areola to the higher position. The skin surrounding the areola is then brought down and together to reshape the breast. Stitches are usually located around the areola, in a vertical line extending downwards from the nipple area, and along the lower crease of the breast.
After your surgery
First few days the pain shouldn’t be severe. Within a few days, the bandages or surgical bra will be replaced by a soft support bra. You'll need to wear this bra around the clock for three to four weeks, over a layer of gauze. The stitches will be removed after a week or two. Most of patients return to work in 2 weeks.
Duration of stay in clinic: 24 hours.
Rehabilitation:
The procedure can cause a temporary loss of feeling in your nipples or breasts. The scars become less obvious, sometimes eventually fading to thin white lines only a year after the surgery especially in nonsmokers. Your breasts will recreate its final shape in 6-12 months after the surgery. Afterward the effects of gravity, pregnancy, aging, and weight fluctuations may cause new sagging. Results may last longer or be enhanced when breast implants are inserted as part of the procedure. There is no evidence that this surgery causes breast cancer.
